Foundations & Vision

  • gallerychosun, nestled in Samcheong-dong—the cultural hub of Seoul—has been a significant presence in the Korean art scene for over 20 years. As a continuation of the legacy established by Chosun Gallery, founded in 1971 as Korea's second-oldest art gallery, it was natural for founder Mi-Seong Kwon to step into the art world, having initially worked under her father at the esteemed Chosun Gallery. In 2004, after years of experience, Kwon founded gallerychosun to embark on her own path. Since then, gallerychosun has actively participated in international art markets, including Art Cologne and Art Basel Miami, marking its place in the contemporary art world.

In addition to its regular exhibitions, gallerychosun has co-hosted projects such as the Soloshow, which took innovative approaches to artwork distribution. Since 2015, the gallery has been engaged in a unique, long-term project to document each artist’s exhibition process, creating an invaluable archive of Korean contemporary art that captures the working processes of artists beyond mere promotional materials. In 2024, gallerychosun participated in Frieze Seoul for the first time, showcasing the work of artists with whom the gallery has fostered long-standing collaborative relationships, as part of the prestigious Galleries section.

During her tenure as Vice Chairman of the Galleries Association of Korea in 2019, CEO Mi-Seong Kwon contributed significantly to the growth of the Korean art market. She was instrumental in creating A Guidebook for Gallery Operations and Art Distribution and advocated for standardized regulations, notably helping to establish the Standard Contract for the Art Industry. Today, Kwon’s son joins her in the gallery, making gallerychosun the first and only art gallery in Korea to pass down its expertise and legacy across three generations. Despite its history, gallerychosun remains committed to forward-thinking, aiming to remain dynamic, open, and innovative, contributing to both Korean and global contemporary art.

  • For the past two generations, we have served as a gallery, and now the time has come for a third generation to take up the mantle. As we navigate this rapidly changing present, we continuously reflect on the evolving role of a gallery, charting our course forward.
