BiographyIncorporating sculpture, installation, drawing and printmaking, the work of Vicky Kim (1978, Seoul) explores the role of images in our conception and production of space, through a critical consideration of the gesture and mediation of architecture. Drawing on research into the social function of images, as well as a background in dance and theatre, Kim questions how subjectivities come to be defined by mediation - her works often embodying the threshold between seemingly contrary states such as image and architectural materiality, space and structure, or reproduction and invention. A graduate of Goldsmiths College, London, and Columbia University, New York, Kim is currently based in London, where she is on the PhD Research programme at the Royal College of Art, developing a thesis entitled 'The Production of Subjectivity through Image, Space, and Architecture'. Solo exhibitions include '2.7 / 4.8 / 7.4 / 9.4 / 12.1 / 15.2 / 18.5 / 22', Chosun Gallery, Seoul, 2019, 'Under the Coral-like Blue Concrete', Gallery Factory, Seoul, 2010, and 'A Room in House X', 2008 Gallery Hinterberg, Zurich, Switzerland, 2008. In 2009, Kim was awarded a residency fellowship as part of the International Artist's Studio Program at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, and in 2018, a production residency for the 4th Kunming Biennale at the Yunnan Art Museum, Kunming, China.
